Renegades of Sunshine - Acknowledgment of Country and Introduction

This project is created and presented on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. Wynter Projects pays respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

Welcome to Renegades of Sunshine.

Your hosts are Chantal Wynter and Genevieve Butler.

Produced by Wynter Projects and supported by Brimbank City Council.

Thanks to Sunshine Historical Society and The Living Museum of the West for their support, voluntary time and resources. A special thanks to the contributing artists.

This project was first conceived as an in-person and a live guided experience. It has been adapted to an audio tour. Please bare with us as it might be a little bumpy.

The self-guided audio tour will traverse the radical side of Sunshine that is abundant with stories about the people that have initiated creative, social and political change.

We acknowledge that Aboriginal people occupied the land for over 60,000 years. First Nations people continue to struggle for justice, land and sovereignty. There are many great books that can be accessed about the history and presence of Aboriginal people in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. We also recommend the paper Green Left Weekly that reports on current Aboriginal issues as allies.

Renegades of Sunshine’s historical content is from a post colonial history. The stories told only scratch the surface. This body of work is at its beginning with a plethora of accounts still yet to be told.

We hope you enjoy.
